Average Costs
Prices vary by region and the specific requirements of the event, but generally fall into these ranges:
Simple Event (e.g., a funeral or 30-minute appearance): $200 – $350
Complex Event (e.g., a wedding with multiple cues): $400 – $600
Add-ons: Expect to pay extra for travel (if over 30 miles), attending rehearsals, or learning a specific non-traditional song.
Key Questions to Ask
To ensure you’re hiring a professional, ask these four questions before signing a contract:
"What is your competitive grade?" (Look for Grade 3 or higher).
"What attire will you wear?" (Most wear "No. 1 Full Dress" (white button up shirt, tie, vest, formal jacket and kilt) or "No. 2 Day Dress" less the jacket).
"Do you have a repertoire list?" (Ensure they know staples like Amazing Grace, Scotland the Brave, or Highland Cathedral).
"How do you handle outdoor weather?" (Bagpipes are sensitive to heat and cold; a pro will know how to adjust their instrument accordingly).
Logistics for the Day
The "Tuning" Period: A piper needs about 15–30 minutes to "warm up" and tune the pipes to the local humidity and temperature. Ensure they have a quiet space to do this before they perform.
Volume: Remember that Highland bagpipes are very loud (approx. 100–120 decibels). If your event is in a small indoor room, you might ask if they play "Small Pipes" (a quieter version).
SPECIFIC QUESTIONS FOR ME!
I also play other instruments besides the Great Highland Bagpipe. I have several sets of "small pipes" for more quiet situations. I also play "Irish Whistles" and "Standard Flute". I can readily play along with a guitar or other instrument, if asked.
I started my bagpiping adventure around the year 2000. Bagpiping is rarely a solitary pursuit. I'm a member of Celtic Nations Pipes and Drums out of Milwaukee "The Midwest's Largest Bagpipe and Drum Band". If I am unable to assist with your inquiry, I will reach out to my bandmates to attempt to fill the spot. I will communicate with you accordingly.
